Just opposite of the conference hotel Le Meridien, across the street, you find the famous Hofburg palace gardens. One part of this complex is the beautiful Palmhouse.

HISTORY

In 1822, a 128 meter long greenhouse was erected, in the Hofburg palace gardens, incorporating part of the old city wall. In 1901, the architect Friedrich Ohman was commissioned to build the splendid Jugendstil palmhouse  replacing the original structure and  giving it its current appearance.
The construction works lasted 5 years and at the end Ohman created without any doubt the most beautiful Jugendstil greenhouse ever built. By 1988 the building had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public. Ten years and $17m later the refurbished building was reopened to the public.
The 2050 sqm. building houses plants used to decorate official functions, one of Viennas most popular restaurants and of course the tropical butterfly house.

PALMHOUSE RESTAURANT

The significant and unique glass and steel construction from the turn of the century is one of the most beautiful in the world. The Palmhouse Restaurant impresses with its extraordinary height of 15 meters and its troughout vitrification which gives the restaurant an open and frankly atmosphere.
The red leather settees provide a bounteous comfort an the rich arrangements of palms and plants blossom gorgeous ans supply well being and relaxation.

ESTC2009 @ THE PALMHOUSE

This year the social evening event of the conference will take place in the Palmhouse Restaurant on the first evening, December 2.
The dinner with buffet and drinks will be accompanied by live music from the female trio "Vienna Swing Sisters".

The ESTC2009 participants are welcome to join this special evening event, where a relaxed atmosphere provides the best environment for socializing.
